Like a lot of people I had previously learned the guitar from a friend showing me a few chords and strumming along to my favourite tracks. Unsurprisingly, I was not very good and had been meaning to take lessons for years. Having decided to actually find a teacher and take some lessons I have been very fortunate that my quick Google landed me on the Bath Guitar School website.
My first lesson was great! Richard took the time to find out what music I liked and what song I ultimately wanted to play (predictably it was Blackbird by The Beatles). Richard asked what I knew already and explained the format of the lessons. This personable approach is, in my experience, a part of each lesson. Each lesson feels tailored to you. Lessons move as fast, or as slow, as I make progress. When I am struggling with something, Richard gives good tips and introduces new songs which helps me practice what I find challenging. But it does not feel like hard work and I have enjoyed each of my lessons. I am amazed by the progress I have made so far and wish I had found Richard and the Bath Guitar School sooner!
I have known Richard for about 5 years now, first meeting him at a Summer School which my son attended in Bath. Richard is a very inspirational tutor and a true professional in his field and his students really get a great deal out of his lessons. My son has attended Summer Schools with Richard and some of his intensive Saturday workshops which are always great fun and tailored to the students’ abilities.
Richard has a great way of relating to students whatever their ability or age. Richard is also now the Head Tutor for Sussex Rocks Summers Schools which are held in Eastbourne in August. We are so lucky to have him as our Head Tutor.
Would recommend him 100% to anyone thinking of either taking up the guitar for the first time or more advanced students wishing to return to playing.
I had been talking about learning the electric guitar for years despite comments from family about a mid life crisis and I found my way to Richard nearly three years ago. The experience has been one of encouragement and (much needed) patience from Richard who is a skilled musician and innovative teacher.
What has been helpful is that the lessons have been adapted to my needs and interests backed up by resources and support online which has been really supportive. But lessons with Richard are about much more than just guitar lessons. It has been a chance to learn about music and play with others on courses and even to have the chance to play with his blues band!
The experience has been excellent and I would encourage anyone (of any age) to have a go and learn a new skill, which I promise you is a rewarding and enjoyable hobby. There are lots of places providing lessons but if you want to learn and grow in confidence and have some fun, then give Richard Perkins a call; you won’t regret it.
Over the past three years, Richard has taught my son guitar from scratch to being the confident, developing player he now is. Throughout this time I have had the benefit of seeing a truly exceptional teacher at work.
It doesn’t hurt that Richard is an excellent musician in his own right, and his enthusiasm for playing is obvious. The great thing is that this passion transfers itself to the student’s own experience. My son has always enjoyed being part of the creative process that Richard engenders. He leaves the session keen to play more.
As a regular employer of teacher/practitioners in both music and drama, I recognise in Richard the key qualities I seek. He understands the point where a student is working from and meets them there. He doesn’t set unobtainable targets. He’s ambitious for his students – and they will benefit from the many extra activities that Richard somehow finds time to organise – and will push them to achieve their potential. The sessions are also run through with a real sense of rock energy, which is very much needed if he work is going to make it into the public domain one day!
I have no hesitation in recommending him without reservation and feel fortunate that I found him and his school.
After 3 unsatisfactory years of playing guitar, I decided to join Bath Guitar School. After only 2 years of being with Bath Guitar School I greatly improved as a guitarist and also as a performer. Being a student there allowed me to perform to the public on numerous occasions, which has lead to me now being in 3 professional bands.
The ‘one on one’ tuition really helped me improve my speed, skill and general knowledge of music. As well as this, there are various workshops to take part in where you can use what you have learnt with other students, forming a band.
Without Bath Guitar School I would’ve given up on music years ago. But thanks to it I have my Grade 5 Guitar and more confidence, skill and enjoyment.
I’m a mature novice guitar student who has been attending lessons since Jan 2012 with Richard from the Bath Guitar School. Richard is a knowledgeable and friendly guy who has a relaxed manner. He is quite free to let you suggest things to learn that you enjoy listening to or can recommend things within that genre to progress your learning. Learning to play the guitar can be quite a commitment and Richard has been very supportive when I’ve found it difficult or felt that my overall progress was not satisfactory. I have witnessed Richard with younger students with whom he is just as friendly and patient. I recommend.
I have been having guitar lessons with Richard Perkins for about 2 years now and I would highly recommend him as a guitar tutor! He is very patient with new learners and will aim to teach you any song you wish to learn, even if he hasn’t taught it previously. He provides helpful feedback and will give you a good range of things to practice and will write it down for you in a way that suits your individual learning needs. If you are keen to learn, he will aim to fit in a lesson for you as often as you would like (even though he does get very booked up!). I started learning later in life (at the age of 30) and although learning new things does tend to take longer when you are older, I feel very happy with the progress I have made in this short time. I wanted to be able to play the guitar for years, but never got round to it before; wish I’d done it sooner as I am really enjoying my lessons. Highly recommended!
Richard, at Bath Guitar School, has been teaching my 15 year old daughter to play guitar for about a year. She was practically a beginner when she started and has progressed enormously. Richard is a fantastic teacher creating the right balance of professionalism, and fun, in the lessons. He encourages his pupils to explore their own musical preferences and my daughter has really enjoyed learning and practicing on her latest favourite tunes.
Richard’s enthusiasm for all things guitar is contagious and every week my daughter leaves her lesson motivated and inspired to persevere and improve. The lessons are well organised and communications through the regular newsletters and website are brilliant. Richard is very personable and the lessons have become a highlight of the week; and I can’t recommend him highly enough.
